Frequently Asked Questions

Summer Special

What was the Summer Special?

A special version of the app was released in summer 2021, containing an extra set of unusual and entertaining puzzles for players to enjoy during the summer holiday season. Some graphical adaptions gave the app a distinctive summer look and a new leaderboard was added, dedicated to the special puzzle set.

When was the Summer Special available?

The Summer Special went live in the App Store on the day of the summer solstice, 21st Jun 2021. It has now been superseded by version 1.12, which is a return to the normal look. However, the extra set of puzzles is still included in this latest version and can be played until the end of August.

Where can I find the special set of puzzles?

On the page for Puzzle Sets - just tap the butterfly symbol.

If the butterfly symbol is not showing then it may be because you have an old version of the app (the latest is 1.12, tap the info icon below the main menu to check), or because the special set is no longer active (see the paragraph on dates, above).

What is so special about the puzzles?

The extra set of puzzles has three groups of puzzles:

From 3x3 to 9x9

Every possible size of puzzle, from the smallest to the largest. The 9x9 is one of only a few rare examples of this size of puzzle!
# Size Difficulty Logical complexity
1 3x3 Easy Normal
2 4x4 Easy Normal
3 5x5 Medium Advanced
4 6x6 Quite easy Normal
5 7x7 Quite easy Normal
6 8x8 Difficult Normal
7 9x9 Very difficult Normal

Sum symmetry

With these puzzles, the rows and the columns have exactly the same sum values, so the solved puzzles are also symmetric across the diagonal. This can make it a little easier to solve the puzzles, because you only need to solve half a puzzle to solve it all! However, they are not all as easy as they might at first seem.
# Size Difficulty Logical complexity
8 5x5 Quite easy Normal
9 7x7 Quite easy Normal
10 6x6 Quite easy Normal
11 5x5 Medium Expert
12 6x6 Difficult Expert
13 5x5 Difficult Expert
14 7x7 Medium Normal
15 6x6 Very difficult Expert

Turn up the logic

These puzzles may be small, but they are especially tricky! They showcase the additional logical complexity that can be turned on with the Random Play puzzle generator.
# Size Difficulty Logical complexity
16 5x5 Difficult Expert
17 6x6 Very difficult Advanced
18 6x6 Difficult Expert
19 5x5 Very difficult Expert
20 6x6 Very difficult Expert

Where can I find more puzzles like these?

The Challenge Trail and the other Puzzle Sets contain puzzles of "normal" complexity. Puzzles with "advanced" and "expert" complexity are otherwise exclusive to Random Play.

Please check out the FAQ section on in-app purchases for more info about the additional packs of the Puzzle Sets and the modes of play supported by Random Play.

Will there be more special releases like this one?

The Summer Special proved to be popular with players and it generated a lot of new interest in the app, so it is quite possible that more special releases will follow. Watch this space!

If you enjoyed playing the puzzles in the special release then please consider rewarding the app with a positive rating in the App Store, thank you!
